| Roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza glabra (Family: Leguminosae) have been in traditional use for centuries in the treatment of peptic ulcer. Numerous clinical studies over the years have found both licorice and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) to be an effective anti-ulcer compound.
Licorice extract and flavonoids present in licorice root have shown to possess anti-Helicobacter pylori activity. Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the major factors in causing peptic ulcer.
Licorice extract has also shown to possess antioxidant activity. Antioxidants have shown to accelerate gastric ulcer healing by decreasing the oxidative stress, one of the important mechanisms leading to epithelial injury in H. pylori infection. |
